Average Calculator
Paste or type a list of numbers. The calculator adds them up, divides by how many there are, and reports the other common measures of the middle.
Result
(4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42) ÷ 6 = 108 ÷ 6 = 18
- Sum
- 108
- Count
- 6
- Median
- 15.5
- Mode
- No mode, every value appears once
- Smallest
- 4
- Largest
- 42
- Range
- 38
- Geometric mean

Formula
- Mean = sum of the values ÷ number of values
- Geometric mean = nth root of the product of n positive values
How the Average Calculator works
The average most people mean is the arithmetic mean: add the numbers and divide by how many there are. It is pulled toward extreme values, so a single very large number can raise it noticeably.
When data are skewed, such as incomes or house prices, the median is often a better summary because half the values lie on each side of it.
Worked example
For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42: the sum is 108 and there are 6 numbers, so the mean is 108 ÷ 6 = 18. The median is the average of the two middle values, (15 + 16) ÷ 2 = 15.5.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted. The mode is the value that occurs most often.
How do I find the average of percentages?
If each percentage is based on the same number of items, average them normally. If not, use a weighted average so that larger groups count for more.
