How the Flooring and Carpet Calculator works

Flooring is sold by the square foot in boxes, and carpet is often priced by the square yard. Measure the room at its longest and widest points, add closets and alcoves, then add waste for cuts.

Ten percent waste suits most straight installations. Use 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone layouts and for rooms with many corners.

Worked example

A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10 percent waste, order 198 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box that is 9.9, so 10 boxes. For carpet, 198 ÷ 9 = 22 sq yd.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to square yards for carpet?

Divide by 9. A 180 square foot room is 20 square yards before waste.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Buy 10 percent extra for a standard layout. Keep any leftover full boxes for future repairs, since dye lots change.
