Long Division Calculator

Enter a dividend and a divisor. The calculator works through the division one digit at a time, the way it is done on paper.

Result

Quotient
15
Remainder
7
Steps
Bring down 4 to make 4. 32 goes into 4 0 times: 0 × 32 = 0, leaving 4.
Bring down 8 to make 48. 32 goes into 48 1 time: 1 × 32 = 32, leaving 16.
Bring down 7 to make 167. 32 goes into 167 5 times: 5 × 32 = 160, leaving 7.
Answer
15 R 7
As a mixed number
15 7/32
As a decimal
15.21875
Check
32 × 15 + 7 = 487

Formula

  • Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder
  • Repeat for each digit: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down

How the Long Division Calculator works

Long division breaks a large division into a series of small ones. Working from the left, bring down one digit at a time, see how many times the divisor fits, write that digit in the quotient, and subtract.

What is left after the last digit is the remainder. Putting it over the divisor gives the fractional part of the answer.

Worked example

487 ÷ 32: 32 goes into 48 once, leaving 16. Bring down the 7 to make 167. 32 goes into 167 five times, since 5 × 32 = 160, leaving 7. The answer is 15 remainder 7, or 15 7/32, or 15.21875.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. The result should equal the dividend.

How do I turn a remainder into a decimal?

Add a decimal point and zeros to the dividend and keep dividing. A remainder of 7 with a divisor of 32 continues as 70 ÷ 32, and so on.
