Understanding Impedance

Key Concepts:

  • Impedance (Z): A complex quantity representing opposition to current flow in AC circuits.
  • Resistance (R): The real part of impedance that dissipates energy as heat.
  • Reactance (X): The imaginary part of impedance that stores and releases energy.
  • Phase Angle: The angle between voltage and current waveforms.
  • Complex Notation: Z = R + jX where j is the imaginary unit.

Impedance Formulas:

  • Magnitude: |Z| = √(R² + X²)
  • Phase Angle: θ = tan⁻¹(X/R)
  • Resistor: Z = R (no reactance, phase angle = 0°)
  • Capacitor: Z = 1/(jωC) = -j/(ωC) (phase angle = -90°)
  • Inductor: Z = jωL (phase angle = +90°)
  • Series Circuit: Z = Z₁ + Z₂ + ... + Zₙ
  • Parallel Circuit: 1/Z = 1/Z₁ + 1/Z₂ + ... + 1/Zₙ

Applications:

Impedance matching is critical in RF systems, audio equipment, and power distribution. Proper matching maximizes power transfer and minimizes signal reflections. Impedance measurements are essential for diagnosing electrical components and circuits, and for designing filters, oscillators, and amplifiers.

Common Applications:

Speakers (4-8Ω), power supply outputs, low impedance headphones

Component Behavior:

Resistors maintain the same impedance regardless of frequency. The current and voltage are in phase (0°).

Basic Formulas:

Z = R + jX (Complex Impedance = Resistance + Reactance)

|Z| = √(R² + X²) (Magnitude of Impedance)

θ = tan⁻¹(X/R) (Phase Angle)

ZR = R (Resistor Impedance)

ZC = 1/jωC (Capacitor Impedance)

ZL = jωL (Inductor Impedance)

Note: ω = 2πf where f is frequency in Hz
