Map Scale Converter
Select a common map scale or enter custom values below
A ratio showing the relationship between map distance and ground distance (e.g., for 1:10000, enter 10000).
Enter in the format "1 [map unit] = [value] [ground unit]" (e.g., "1 cm = 100 m").
Distance Conversion
Real-world distance on the ground
Corresponding distance measured on the map
Scale Category:
Large Scale (detailed)
1:1 - 1:10,000
Medium Scale
1:10,001 - 1:100,000
Small Scale (overview)
1:100,001 - 1:
Common Use:
Hiking or trail maps (1:10000 - 1:25000)
Understanding Map Scales
Representative Fraction (RF)
A ratio showing map distance to ground distance, usually written as 1:10,000 (read as "one to ten thousand").
Example: 1:50,000
Means that 1 unit on the map represents 50,000 of the same units on the ground.
Verbal Scale
A written statement of the relationship between map and ground distances, using specific units.
Example: 1 cm = 5 km
Means that 1 centimeter on the map represents 5 kilometers on the ground.
Graphic Scale (Bar Scale)
A line or bar marked with distances on the map and corresponding ground distances.
Allows direct measurement of distances on the map without calculation.
Great for maps that might be enlarged or reduced.
Map Scale Considerations
Large Scale vs. Small Scale
- Large scale maps (e.g., 1:10,000) show a small area in great detail.
- Small scale maps (e.g., 1:1,000,000) show a large area with less detail.
- The terms can be counterintuitive: "large scale" has a smaller denominator in the representative fraction.
Choosing the Right Scale
- Hiking/Trail maps: 1:24,000 - 1:25,000
- Road maps: 1:50,000 - 1:250,000
- City plans: 1:5,000 - 1:15,000
- Building plans: 1:100 - 1:500
- World maps: 1:5,000,000 or smaller

Common Map Scales
| Scale | Category | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1:500 | Large | Site plans, detailed engineering |
| 1:5,000 | Large | Urban planning, local areas |
| 1:25,000 | Medium | Hiking maps, detailed topographic |
| 1:50,000 | Medium | Standard topographic maps |
| 1:100,000 | Medium | Regional maps, transportation |
| 1:250,000 | Small | Regional planning, aeronautical |
| 1:1,000,000 | Small | National mapping, overview |
Scale Implications
Detail Level
As scale gets smaller (denominator gets larger), less detail can be shown because each feature takes up less space on the map.
Map Accuracy
Larger scales generally allow for greater positional accuracy, while smaller scales provide a broader overview with less precision.
Scale & Area
Area scales as the square of distance (if linear scale is 1:10,000, then area scale is 1:100,000,000).
Digital Considerations
Digital maps often allow "scale-less" viewing by zooming in and out. When printing, ensure the scale is properly preserved.
Conversion Tips
- To convert RF to verbal scale, determine how many ground units are in one map unit.
- For a scale of 1:10,000, 1 cm on the map equals 10,000 cm (or 100 m) on the ground.
- When scaling measurements on maps, remember that area scales as the square of distance (a 1:2 scale means areas are 1:4).
- Digital maps often allow "scale-less" viewing by zooming in and out.
- When printing maps, scale may change if not printed at 100% size.
