Understanding Molarity

Molarity is a measure of concentration defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. It is denoted by M, and is commonly used in chemistry and biochemistry.

Different Units of Concentration:

  • Molarity (M or mol/L): Moles of solute per liter of solution
  • Molality (mol/kg): Moles of solute per kilogram of solvent
  • Normality (N or Eq/L): Gram equivalents of solute per liter of solution
  • Parts per million (ppm): Mass of solute (mg) per mass of solution (kg)
  • Parts per billion (ppb): Mass of solute (μg) per mass of solution (kg)

Calculation Example:

To prepare 1 L of 1 M NaCl solution:
1 mol/L × 58.44 g/mol × 1 L = 58.44 g of NaCl needed

Dilution Formula

M₁V₁ = M₂V₂

Where:
M₁ = Initial molarity
V₁ = Initial volume
M₂ = Final molarity
V₂ = Final volume

This formula is useful for calculating how to dilute a stock solution to a desired concentration.

Applications of Molarity

Laboratory

  • Preparation of buffer solutions
  • Standardization of analytical methods
  • Titrations and chemical reactions
  • Spectrophotometric analysis

Medicine

  • Blood electrolyte measurements
  • Drug formulations and dosing
  • IV fluid preparation
  • Diagnostic testing

Tips for Working with Molarity

  • Temperature Effects: Volume changes with temperature, so molarity can vary slightly. For precision work, specify the temperature.
  • Preparation: Always dissolve the solute completely before diluting to the final volume.
  • Storage: Label solutions with concentration, date prepared, and your initials.
  • Precision: For very accurate solutions, use volumetric flasks rather than measuring cylinders or beakers.
