Understanding Resistance and Conductance

Key Concepts

  • Resistance (R) opposes electric current flow
  • Conductance (G) is the reciprocal of resistance: G = 1/R
  • The SI unit of resistance is the ohm (Ω)
  • The SI unit of conductance is the siemens (S)
  • Conductors have low resistance, high conductance
  • Insulators have high resistance, low conductance

Ohm's Law & Related Formulas

  • V = I × R (Voltage = Current × Resistance)
  • I = V ÷ R (Current = Voltage ÷ Resistance)
  • R = V ÷ I (Resistance = Voltage ÷ Current)
  • P = I² × R (Power = Current² × Resistance)
  • For resistors in series: Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + ...
  • For resistors in parallel: 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ...

Resistance Factors

Resistance depends on:

  • Material: Conductors (metals) have low resistance, insulators (rubber, glass) have high resistance
  • Length: Resistance increases with length (R ∝ L)
  • Cross-sectional area: Resistance decreases with area (R ∝ 1/A)
  • Temperature: For most metals, resistance increases with temperature

Ohm's Law Relations:

R = V/I (Resistance = Voltage / Current)

V = I×R (Voltage = Current × Resistance)

I = V/R (Current = Voltage / Resistance)

P = I²×R (Power = Current² × Resistance)

Note: Resistance (R) opposes current flow in an electrical circuit.

Siemens (S) is the unit of conductance, where S = 1/Ω

For a 4-band resistor: 1st & 2nd bands are digits, 3rd is multiplier, 4th is tolerance. For a 5-band resistor: 1st, 2nd & 3rd bands are digits, 4th is multiplier, 5th is tolerance.

Practical Applications

Electronic Circuits:

Resistors control current flow, divide voltage, and create timing circuits.

Measurement:

Resistance measurements help diagnose electrical problems and component failures.

Sensors:

Resistance changes can detect temperature (thermistors), light (photoresistors), and strain (strain gauges).

Heating Elements:

Controlled resistance produces heat in toasters, electric heaters, and soldering irons.
