Understanding Digital Resolution

Pixel Dimensions

The width and height of an image measured in pixels. For example, a Full HD display has 1920×1080 pixels.

Higher dimensions allow for more detail but require more storage space and processing power.

Megapixels (MP)

The total number of pixels in an image, measured in millions. A 12MP camera produces images with approximately 12 million pixels.

Modern smartphone cameras range from 12MP to 108MP, while professional cameras typically offer 24-60MP.

PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

Describes the pixel density on a display or in a printed image. Higher PPI means sharper images with more detail.

For printing, 300 PPI is considered standard quality, while modern smartphone displays often exceed 400 PPI.

Aspect Ratio

The proportional relationship between width and height. Common ratios include 16:9 (widescreen), 4:3 (standard), and 1:1 (square).

Different devices and media formats use different aspect ratios, which is why content may sometimes appear with black bars.

Resolution Tips

  • • Higher resolution means more detail but larger file size
  • • For web images, balance quality with load times
  • • Video resolution impacts streaming bandwidth requirements
  • • Most modern displays use 1080p (Full HD) or higher
  • • Phone cameras typically output 12MP to 48MP images
  • • When upscaling, image quality may be reduced

Common Conversion Formulas

FromToFormula
Pixel Density (PPI) Resolution (pixels), Diagonal (inches) PPI = √(width² + height²) / diagonal
Megapixels (MP) Resolution (width × height) MP = (width × height) / 1,000,000
Print Width (inches) Pixel Width, DPI Print Width = Pixel Width / DPI
Aspect Ratio Width, Height Aspect Ratio = Width:Height (simplified)
