Common Screen Types
Aspect Ratio Guide
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a screen's width and height. It's typically expressed as width:height (e.g., 16:9).
Common Aspect Ratios
- 16:9 (1.78:1) - Standard widescreen format for TVs, monitors, and videos
- 4:3 (1.33:1) - Traditional TV format, some tablets
- 21:9 (2.33:1) - UltraWide monitors, cinematic format
- 16:10 (1.6:1) - Used in some laptops and professional monitors
- 3:2 (1.5:1) - Used in some tablets and laptops, classic photography
Applications
- Movies - Often 21:9 (2.35:1) to 2.40:1 for widescreen cinematic feel
- Gaming - Wide aspect ratios (21:9, 32:9) for immersive experiences
- Productivity - 16:10 provides more vertical space for documents
- Mobile - Taller ratios like 18:9, 19:9, or 20:9 for better one-handed use
- Photography - Often 3:2 or 4:3 to match sensor formats
Screen Resolution Terminology
- HD (720p) - 1280×720 pixels
- Full HD (1080p) - 1920×1080 pixels
- QHD/WQHD (1440p) - 2560×1440 pixels
- UHD 4K - 3840×2160 pixels (Consumer "4K")
- UHD 8K - 7680×4320 pixels
- Retina Display - High PPI where individual pixels are indistinguishable at normal viewing distance

Resolution Information
Viewing Distance
The optimal viewing distance depends on screen size and resolution. For a comfortable experience:
For your 24" screen:
- SD content: 180 inches (15 ft)
- HD content: 120 inches (10 ft)
- 4K content: 60 inches (5 ft)
General Guidelines:
- For TVs: 1.5-2.5× the screen diagonal
- For monitors: 1-1.5× the screen diagonal
- For smartphones: 10-14 inches
Pixel Density Guide
Pixel density (PPI) affects how sharp a display appears. Here's what to expect:
Below 90 PPI
Visible pixelation, suitable for distant viewing (large TVs, projectors)
90-150 PPI
Good for TVs and larger monitors viewed from a distance
150-250 PPI
Excellent for monitors and laptops at normal viewing distance
250-300+ PPI
Retina-quality, ideal for smartphones, tablets, and premium displays
Your Screen: 92 PPI
Standard density - good for TVs and larger displays

Common Conversion Formulas
| From | To | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Diagonal Size (inches) | Width & Height (inches) | Width = Diagonal × cos(tan⁻¹(h/w)), Height = Diagonal × sin(tan⁻¹(h/w)) |
| Resolution (w × h) | Aspect Ratio | Aspect Ratio = w : h (simplified) |
| Diagonal (inches), Resolution (pixels) | Pixel Density (PPI) | PPI = √(width² + height²) / Diagonal |
