Understanding Tire Pressure

Importance of Correct Tire Pressure

  • Improves fuel efficiency by up to 3%
  • Extends tire life by reducing uneven wear
  • Enhances safety and handling precision
  • Provides a smoother ride with less road noise
  • Reduces the risk of blowouts and flat tires

When to Check Tire Pressure

  • At least once a month
  • Before long trips or heavy loads
  • When tires are cold (before driving)
  • When outdoor temperatures change significantly
  • After hitting potholes or curbs

Finding Your Recommended Pressure

Your vehicle's recommended tire pressure can be found in:

  • Driver's side door jamb sticker
  • Owner's manual
  • Inside fuel door
  • Glove box

Note: The pressure listed on the tire sidewall is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure for your vehicle.

Tire Pressure Units

PSI:
Standard in the US. 1 PSI = force of 1 pound on 1 square inch.
Bar:
Common in Europe. 1 bar ≈ 14.5038 PSI, close to atmospheric pressure.
kPa:
SI unit of pressure. 100 kPa = 1 bar, 1 kPa ≈ 0.145038 PSI.
kg/cm²:
Used in some regions. 1 kg/cm² ≈ 14.2233 PSI, slightly less than 1 bar.

Temperature Effects

Tire pressure changes approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F (5.6°C) change in temperature.

Cold weather ❄️Hot weather 🔥
Lower pressureHigher pressure

Tires lose pressure naturally over time due to permeation through the rubber. Check pressure regularly, especially after seasonal temperature changes.
