Discount Calculator
Enter the original price and the percent off. The calculator shows what you pay and what you save. Add a second discount or a sales tax rate if they apply.
Result
- Total discount
- 25%
Formula
- Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
- Savings = original price − sale price
- Two discounts: price × (1 − d₁ ÷ 100) × (1 − d₂ ÷ 100)
How the Discount Calculator works
A percent off discount removes that share of the original price. The quickest method is to multiply the price by what remains: 25 percent off leaves 75 percent, so multiply by 0.75.
Stacked discounts are applied one after the other and do not simply add. Twenty percent off followed by an extra 10 percent off is a total of 28 percent off, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.
Worked example
An 80.00 item at 25 percent off: 80 × 0.75 = 60.00. You save 20.00.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 30 percent off?
Multiply the price by 0.70. For a price of 50, that is 35. You save 15.
Is 20 percent off plus 10 percent off the same as 30 percent off?
No. It is 28 percent off. The second discount is taken from the reduced price: 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.28.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
In most places tax is charged on the discounted price for store discounts. Manufacturer coupons can be treated differently, so check local rules.
