How the Tip Calculator works
A tip is a percentage of the bill. To work it out in your head, find 10 percent by moving the decimal point one place left, then scale it: double it for 20 percent, or add half again for 15 percent.
In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is customary for table service. Customs differ widely elsewhere, and in many countries a service charge is already included.
Worked example
On a bill of 50.00 with an 18 percent tip, the tip is 50 × 0.18 = 9.00 and the total is 59.00. Split between two people, each pays 29.50.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20 percent tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10 percent, then double it. For a bill of 64.00, 10 percent is 6.40 and 20 percent is 12.80.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.
