Formula

  • bⁿ = b × b × … × b (n times)
  • b⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ bⁿ
  • b^(1/n) = the nth root of b
  • b⁰ = 1 for any non-zero b

How the Exponent Calculator works

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself. Two to the tenth power is ten twos multiplied together, which is 1,024.

A negative exponent means a reciprocal, so 2⁻³ is 1 ÷ 8. A fractional exponent means a root, so 9 to the power one half is the square root of 9, which is 3.

Worked example

2¹⁰ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 1,024.

Frequently asked questions

What is any number to the power of 0?

Any non-zero number raised to the power of 0 is 1. The expression 0⁰ is usually defined as 1 in algebra and combinatorics.

How do I calculate a negative exponent?

Compute the positive power and take the reciprocal. 5⁻² = 1 ÷ 5² = 1 ÷ 25 = 0.04.
