How the Letter to Number Converter works
The A1Z26 cipher swaps each letter for its place in the alphabet. It is one of the simplest substitution codes and appears often in puzzles, escape rooms and geocaching.
When decoding, separate the numbers of one word with dashes or single spaces, and separate words with two spaces or a slash.
Worked example
"Hello" becomes 8-5-12-12-15, because H is the 8th letter, E the 5th, L the 12th and O the 15th. The values add up to 52.
Frequently asked questions
What number is each letter of the alphabet?
A is 1, B is 2 and so on through Z, which is 26. M is 13 and N is 14, the middle of the alphabet.
How do I find the number value of a word?
Convert each letter to its position and add them. The encoder shows this sum under the result.
