Common Conversions
Common Data Transfer Rate Conversions
| Connection Type | Typical Speed | 1 GB Download Time |
|---|---|---|
| Dial-up (56k) | 56 Kbps | ~40 hours |
| Basic DSL | 5 Mbps | ~27 minutes |
| Standard Broadband | 25 Mbps | ~5.3 minutes |
| Fast Cable | 100 Mbps | ~1.3 minutes |
| Fiber Optic | 1 Gbps | ~8 seconds |
| 5G Wireless (peak) | 1-10 Gbps | 1-8 seconds |
| 10 Gigabit Ethernet | 10 Gbps | ~0.8 seconds |
Understanding Bits vs. Bytes
There is often confusion between bits and bytes when dealing with data transfer rates and file sizes:
Data Transfer Rates (bits)
- Measured in bits per second (bps)
- Used by ISPs to advertise speeds
- Shown with lowercase "b" (Mbps, Gbps)
- Example: 100 Mbps internet connection
- Network hardware uses this measurement
File Sizes & Downloads (bytes)
- Measured in bytes (B, KB, MB, GB)
- Used for file sizes and storage
- Shown with uppercase "B" (MB/s, GB/s)
- Example: 15 MB file size, 12.5 MB/s download
- 1 byte = 8 bits
Conversion Example:
A 100 Mbps internet connection can download at a maximum of 12.5 MB/s.
100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s
This is why a 100 Mbps connection doesn't download a 100 MB file in 1 second, but in approximately 8 seconds.

Common Conversion Formulas
| From | To | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| MB/s | Mbps (Megabits per second) | Mbps = MB/s × 8 |
| GB/hour | MB/s | GB/hour = MB/s × 3.6 |
| Transfer Time | File Size (GB), Transfer Rate (MB/s) | Time (seconds) = (File Size × 1,024) / Transfer Rate |
| Monthly Usage (GB) | Daily Usage (MB) | Monthly Usage = (Daily Usage × 30) / 1,024 |
