Linear Feet Calculator

Linear feet measure length only. Use this calculator to find how many linear feet of decking, siding or trim cover an area, or to convert a length of board back to the area it covers.

Formula

  • Linear feet = square feet × 12 ÷ board width in inches
  • Square feet = linear feet × board width in inches ÷ 12
  • Total linear feet = number of pieces × length of each piece

How the Linear Feet Calculator works

A linear foot is one foot of length regardless of width or thickness. To cover an area with boards you need to know the width of each board, because a narrow board covers less area per foot of length.

Use the actual face width of the board, not the nominal size. A 1 × 6 deck board is 5.5 inches wide.

Worked example

To cover 200 sq ft with boards 5.5 in wide you need 200 × 12 ÷ 5.5 = 436.36 linear feet. That is 28 boards of 16 ft.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to linear feet?

Multiply the square feet by 12 and divide by the board width in inches. For 100 square feet of 6 inch boards, 100 × 12 ÷ 6 = 200 linear feet.

Is a linear foot the same as a foot?

Yes. Linear foot is used to make clear that only length is being measured, not area or volume.
