Pool Volume Calculator

Enter the pool shape, size and the shallow and deep end depths. The calculator uses the average depth to find the water volume in US gallons and liters.

Result

Pool volume
22,023 US gallons
Liters
83,365 L
Cubic feet
2,944 cu ft
Cubic meters
83.36 m³
Average depth
5.75 ft
Surface area
512 sq ft

Formula

  • Average depth = (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2
  • Rectangular: volume = length × width × average depth
  • Round: volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × average depth
  • Oval: volume = π ÷ 4 × length × width × average depth
  • 1 cubic foot = 7.48052 US gallons

How the Pool Volume Calculator works

Pool volume is the surface area times the average water depth. For a floor that slopes evenly from the shallow end to the deep end, the average depth is the mean of the two.

One cubic foot of water is 7.48052 US gallons. Knowing the volume lets you dose chlorine, salt and other chemicals correctly.

Worked example

A rectangular pool 32 ft × 16 ft that goes from 3.5 ft to 8 ft deep has an average depth of 5.75 ft. Volume = 32 × 16 × 5.75 = 2,944 cu ft, which is 2,944 × 7.48052 = 22,023 gallons.

Frequently asked questions

How many gallons are in a 16 × 32 pool?

With an average depth of 5 feet, a 16 × 32 foot rectangular pool holds about 19,150 gallons. At 5.75 feet average depth it holds about 22,023 gallons.

How do I calculate gallons for a round pool?

Multiply 3.1416 by the radius squared and by the depth to get cubic feet, then multiply by 7.48. A 24 foot round pool 4 feet deep holds about 13,536 gallons.
