Formula

  • Volume = π × (inner diameter ÷ 2)² × length
  • 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches

How the Pipe Volume Calculator works

A pipe is a long cylinder. Its capacity is the area of the bore times the length. Use the inside diameter, which is smaller than the nominal pipe size for most schedules.

This figure is useful for sizing expansion tanks, estimating how long a hot water line takes to run warm, and working out antifreeze or chemical doses.

Worked example

A pipe with a 2 in inside diameter and 100 ft long holds π × 1² × 1,200 = 3,769.9 cubic inches, which is 16.32 US gallons or 61.78 liters.

Frequently asked questions

How many gallons does 100 feet of 1 inch pipe hold?

About 4.08 gallons for a true 1 inch inside diameter. Each foot holds 0.0408 gallons.

Should I use the nominal or the inside diameter?

Use the inside diameter. A nominal 2 inch schedule 40 pipe has an inside diameter of 2.067 inches, and a 2 inch schedule 80 pipe is 1.939 inches.
