Enter the radius or diameter and the height. The calculator returns the volume and the lateral and total surface areas.

Result

Volume
282.7433 cm³
Total surface area
245.0442 cm²
Lateral surface area
188.4956 cm²
Area of one end
28.2743 cm²

Formula

  • Volume = π × r² × h
  • Lateral area = 2π × r × h
  • Total surface area = 2π × r × (r + h)

How the Cylinder Volume Calculator works

A cylinder is a circle extended through a height. Its volume is the area of the circular base times the height, which is the same idea as for any prism.

The curved side unrolls into a rectangle whose width is the circumference of the base, giving the lateral area. Adding the two circular ends gives the total surface area.

Worked example

A cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm has a volume of π × 9 × 10 = 282.7433 cm³, which is 0.2827 liters. Its total surface area is 2π × 3 × 13 = 245.0442 cm².

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder in gallons?

Find the volume in cubic inches and divide by 231. A tank 24 inches across and 48 inches tall holds π × 12² × 48 ÷ 231 = 94 gallons.

What is the formula with diameter instead of radius?

Volume = π × d² × h ÷ 4.
