Sphere Volume Calculator

Enter the radius or diameter of a sphere to get its volume, surface area and circumference.

Result

Volume
904.7787 cm³
Surface area
452.3893 cm²
Circumference
37.6991 cm
Diameter
12 cm
Volume in liters
0.9048 L

Formula

  • Volume = 4 ÷ 3 × π × r³
  • Surface area = 4 × π × r²
  • With diameter: Volume = π × d³ ÷ 6

How the Sphere Volume Calculator works

A sphere is the set of points at a fixed distance from a center. Archimedes showed that its volume is two thirds of the cylinder that just encloses it, and that its surface area equals the curved area of that cylinder.

Because the volume depends on the cube of the radius, doubling the radius multiplies the volume by eight.

Worked example

A sphere with a radius of 6 cm has a volume of 4 ÷ 3 × π × 216 = 904.7787 cm³ and a surface area of 4 × π × 36 = 452.3893 cm².

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the volume of a hemisphere?

Halve the sphere volume: 2 ÷ 3 × π × r³.

How do I find the radius from the volume?

r = cube root of (3 × V ÷ (4π)). A volume of 1,000 gives a radius of 6.204.
