Box Volume Calculator (Rectangular Prism)

Enter the three dimensions of a box. For a cube, enter the same value three times.

Result

Volume
72 cm³
Surface area
108 cm²
Space diagonal
7.8102 cm
Total edge length
52 cm
Volume in liters
0.072 L
Volume in US gallons

Formula

  • Volume = length × width × height
  • Surface area = 2 × (lw + lh + wh)
  • Space diagonal = √(l² + w² + h²)

How the Box Volume Calculator works

A rectangular prism is a box with six rectangular faces. Its volume is the area of the base times the height. The surface area adds the three different face areas, each of which appears twice.

The space diagonal is the longest straight line that fits inside the box, from one corner to the opposite corner.

Worked example

A box 6 cm × 4 cm × 3 cm has a volume of 72 cm³ and a surface area of 2 × (24 + 18 + 12) = 108 cm². Its space diagonal is √(36 + 16 + 9) = 7.8102 cm.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cubic feet?

Multiply length, width and height in feet. For dimensions in inches, multiply them and divide by 1,728.

What is the volume of a cube?
