Understanding Fuel Economy Measurements
Fuel economy measures how efficiently a vehicle uses fuel, expressed in different ways around the world:
Distance-per-Volume Units:
- Miles per gallon (MPG): Standard in the US
- Miles per gallon (UK MPG): Used in the UK (imperial gallon)
- Kilometers per liter (km/L): Common in Japan and some European countries
- Miles per liter (mi/L): Less common but useful for conversions
Higher values indicate better efficiency
Volume-per-Distance Units:
- Liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km): Standard in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand
- Gallons per 100 miles: Alternative format sometimes used in the US
Lower values indicate better efficiency
Regional Standards:
- United States: MPG (US gallons) is the standard
- United Kingdom: MPG (UK gallons) is traditional, but L/100km is also used
- European Union: L/100km is the standard
- Japan: km/L is the standard
- Australia: L/100km is the standard
Important Differences:
US vs. UK Gallons: The UK (imperial) gallon is approximately 20% larger than the US gallon.
- 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters
- 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 liters
- UK MPG × 0.83267 = US MPG (approximate conversion)

Tips to Improve Fuel Economy
- ✓Drive smoothly: Avoid rapid acceleration and braking
- ✓Maintain proper tire pressure: Under-inflated tires increase fuel consumption
- ✓Remove excess weight: Every 100 lbs reduces MPG by about 1%
- ✓Use cruise control: On highways to maintain a constant speed
- ✓Regular maintenance: Keep your engine properly tuned
- ✓Reduce drag: Close windows at high speeds and remove roof racks when not in use
