FFMI Calculator
FFMI relates your lean body mass to your height. Enter weight, height and body fat percentage to get your FFMI, the normalized value and your lean mass.
Result
- Lean body mass
- 68 kg
- Lean body mass in pounds
- 149.9 lb
- Fat mass
- 12 kg
- BMI
- 24.7
A normalized FFMI near 25 is often cited as the upper range seen in drug-free male athletes, from a 1995 study by Kouri and colleagues. These figures are estimates for healthy adults and are not medical advice.
Formula
- Lean mass = weight × (1 − body fat ÷ 100)
- FFMI = lean mass (kg) ÷ height (m)²
- Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)
How the FFMI Calculator works
Body mass index cannot tell muscle from fat. The fat-free mass index removes fat from the calculation, so it reflects how much lean tissue you carry for your height.
The normalized figure adjusts everyone to a height of 1.80 m so that tall and short people can be compared. The result is only as good as the body fat estimate you enter.
Worked example
At 80 kg, 180 cm and 15 percent body fat, lean mass is 80 × 0.85 = 68 kg. FFMI = 68 ÷ 1.8² = 20.99. Because the height is exactly 1.80 m, the normalized value is the same.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good FFMI?
For men, roughly 18 to 20 is average, 20 to 22 is above average and 22 to 25 reflects years of serious training. Typical values for women are about 3 to 4 points lower.
How is FFMI different from BMI?
BMI uses total body weight. FFMI uses only lean mass, so a muscular person with low body fat is not classed as overweight.
