Walking stride is estimated as 41.3 percent of height for women and 41.5 percent for men. Running strides are longer.
Formula
- Distance = steps × stride length
- Estimated stride = height × 0.413 (women) or 0.415 (men)
- Steps per mile = 5,280 ft ÷ stride length in feet
How the Steps to Miles Calculator works
The distance covered by a number of steps depends on the length of each step. A commonly used estimate takes walking stride as a fixed fraction of height.
For a precise figure, walk a measured distance such as 20 meters, count your steps and divide. Enter that as a measured stride.
Worked example
A woman 170 cm tall has an estimated stride of 170 × 0.413 = 70.2 cm. 10,000 steps cover 7.02 km, or 4.36 miles. That is about 2,292 steps per mile.
