Predictions assume similar training for each distance. They are most reliable between half and double the distance you entered.

Formula

  • Pace = time ÷ distance
  • Speed = distance ÷ time
  • Riegel prediction: T₂ = T₁ × (D₂ ÷ D₁)^1.06

How the Pace Calculator works

Pace is the time taken to cover one unit of distance, written as minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile. Speed is its inverse. A pace of 5:00 per kilometer is 12 km/h.

Runners slow down as distance grows. Peter Riegel's formula, published in 1977, models this with an exponent of 1.06 and is the basis of most race time predictors.

Worked example

Running 10 km in 50:00 is a pace of 50 ÷ 10 = 5:00 per km, which is 8:03 per mile and a speed of 12 km/h. The Riegel formula predicts a half marathon of about 1:50:19.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a 2 hour half marathon?

About 5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile. The half marathon is 21.0975 km or 13.1094 miles.

How do I convert treadmill speed to pace?

Divide 60 by the speed. At 6 mph the pace is 60 ÷ 6 = 10:00 per mile. At 10 km/h it is 6:00 per kilometer.

How long is a marathon?

A marathon is 42.195 kilometers, which is 26.2188 miles.
