Densities are nominal values for each metal. Alloys vary by a few percent.

Formula

  • Weight = volume × density
  • Plate: volume = length × width × thickness
  • Round bar: volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length
  • Tube: volume = π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × length
  • Carbon steel = 7,850 kg/m³ = 0.2836 lb per cubic inch

How the Metal Weight Calculator works

The weight of a metal part is its volume times the density of the metal. Work out the cross-section area for the shape, multiply by the length, then multiply by the density.

Carbon steel is 7,850 kilograms per cubic meter, aluminum is about 2,700 and copper is 8,960. That makes steel almost three times as heavy as aluminum for the same part.

Worked example

A carbon steel plate 96 in × 48 in × 0.25 in has a volume of 1,152 cubic inches. At 0.2836 lb per cubic inch it weighs 326.7 lb, which matches the standard 10.21 lb per square foot for quarter-inch plate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4 × 8 sheet of quarter-inch steel weigh?

About 327 pounds. Quarter-inch steel plate weighs 10.21 pounds per square foot, and the sheet is 32 square feet.

How do I calculate the weight of a steel bar?

Multiply the cross-section area by the length and by 0.2836 pounds per cubic inch. A 1 inch round bar weighs 2.67 pounds per foot.
