About Flow Rate Units:

Liquid Flow Applications:

Liquid flow rates are used in plumbing, irrigation, oil & gas, water treatment, chemical processing, and HVAC systems.

Common Liquid Flow Rates:

  • Dripping faucet: 0.05-0.1 L/min
  • Bathroom faucet: 4-8 L/min
  • Shower head: 8-15 L/min
  • Garden hose: 15-30 L/min
  • Fire hydrant: 1000-2000 L/min

Understanding the Units:

Volume flow rate measures the volume of fluid that passes per unit of time. Standard conditions for liquids are typically defined at room temperature (20°C).

Key Formulas:

Q = A × v

Where Q is flow rate, A is cross-sectional area, and v is flow velocity.

Mass flow rate = ρ × Q

Where ρ is fluid density.

The visualization shows relative liquid flow through a pipe. Particle count and speed represent the flow rate. Blue particles represent water or other liquids.

Liquid Flow Rate Notes

Reynolds Number: For pipes, laminar flow occurs when Re < 2000, and turbulent flow when Re > 4000. The transition region between 2000 and 4000 is unstable.

Flow Velocity: Recommended velocities in pipes:

  • Suction lines: 0.5-1.0 m/s
  • Discharge lines: 1.5-3.0 m/s
  • High-pressure systems: Up to 5.0 m/s

Liquid Flow Standards

Major standards for liquid flow measurement:

  • ISO 4064: Water flow measurement
  • ISO 5167: Flow measurement by pressure differential devices
  • ASME MFC: Measurement of fluid flow in pipes
  • API MPMS: Manual of petroleum measurement standards
