Letter grades use the common scale where 93 and above is an A, 90 an A−, 87 a B+, 83 a B and so on down to 60 for a D−. Your school may use different cut-offs.
Formula
- Required score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
- w = weight of the final exam as a decimal
- Course grade = current × (1 − w) + final score × w
How the Final Grade Calculator works
Your course grade after the final is a weighted average of your grade before the final and the final itself. Setting that average equal to your target and solving for the final exam score gives the formula.
The current grade should be your grade on everything except the final. A final worth a large share of the course can move your grade a lot in either direction.
Worked example
With a current grade of 88, a target of 90 and a final worth 25%: required = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96 percent.

What do I need on my final to keep an A?
Enter your current grade, 90 or 93 as the target depending on your school's scale, and the weight of the final. The first result is the score you need.
What if the required score is over 100?
Then the target cannot be reached through the final alone. The calculator shows the highest course grade still possible.
