Grade points: A and A+ 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0. Schools differ in how they weight honors and AP classes, and some count an A+ as 4.3.

Formula

  • GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
  • Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses before multiplying
  • Cumulative GPA = (old GPA × old credits + new quality points) ÷ total credits

How the GPA Calculator works

Grade point average is the credit-weighted mean of your grade points. Each letter grade maps to a number on the 4.0 scale. Multiply by the credits of the course to get quality points, add them, and divide by total credits.

A weighted GPA rewards harder classes by adding half a point for honors and a full point for AP or IB courses, so it can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate GPA with their own rules.

Worked example

English A (3 credits), Math B+ (4), Science A− (4) and History B (3): quality points = 4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4 + 3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 3 = 49. With 14 credits the GPA is 49 ÷ 14 = 3.50.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every class the same on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds extra points for honors, AP and IB classes, so the maximum is usually 5.0.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by the credits you have completed, add this term's quality points and divide by the new total of credits. Enter the first two values in the optional fields.

How do I convert a percentage to a 4.0 GPA?

Convert the percentage to a letter grade first, then to grade points. On the common scale, 93 and above is 4.0, 90 to 92 is 3.7, 87 to 89 is 3.3 and 83 to 86 is 3.0.
