Letter grades use the common scale where 93 and above is an A, 90 an A−, 87 a B+, 83 a B and so on down to 60 for a D−. Your school may use different cut-offs.

Formula

  • Weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights
  • When the weights total 100: grade = Σ (score × weight ÷ 100)

How the Grade Calculator works

In a weighted course, each category counts for a fixed share of the final grade. Multiply each score by its weight, add the products and divide by the total weight.

If some work has not been graded yet, the weights entered will total less than 100. The result is then your grade so far, based only on completed work.

Worked example

Homework 90 at 20%, quizzes 85 at 20%, midterm 78 at 25% and final 88 at 35%: 90 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25 + 88 × 35 = 8,530. Dividing by 100 gives 85.3 percent, a B.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight as a decimal and add the results. A 90 worth 20 percent contributes 18 points, and an 80 worth 80 percent contributes 64, for a grade of 82.

What if my class uses points instead of weights?

Add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible. You can also enter each assignment with its points possible as the weight and your percentage as the score.
