Formula
- Score = (questions − wrong) ÷ questions × 100
- Value of each question = 100 ÷ number of questions
How the Test Score Calculator works
A test score is the share of questions answered correctly, written as a percentage. Subtract the wrong answers from the total, divide by the total and multiply by 100.
Teachers use a grading chart, often called an easy grader, to look up the percentage for any number of wrong answers without doing the division each time.
Worked example
On a 40 question test with 6 wrong, 34 are correct. The score is 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85 percent, which is a B. Each question is worth 2.5 percent.
Frequently asked questions
What grade is 17 out of 20?
17 out of 20 is 85 percent, a B on the common scale.
How many questions can I miss and still get an A?
For an A− at 90 percent, you can miss up to 10 percent of the questions. That is 2 on a 20 question test, 4 on a 40 question test and 5 on a 50 question test.
