Formula

  • 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM: add 12 to the hour (2:30 PM = 1430)
  • 12:00 AM to 12:59 AM: the hour becomes 00 (12:15 AM = 0015)
  • 1300 to 2359: subtract 12 from the hour and add PM (1830 = 6:30 PM)

How the Military Time Converter works

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits without a colon. The first two digits are the hour from 00 to 23 and the last two are the minutes. It removes the need for AM and PM.

Morning times look almost the same in both systems: 9:05 AM is 0905. For afternoon and evening, add 12 to the hour. Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200.

Worked example

2:30 PM is in the afternoon, so add 12 to the hour: 2 + 12 = 14. In military time it is 1430, said as fourteen thirty.
