- Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600
- Minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60
How the Time to Decimal Calculator works
Payroll systems multiply hours by an hourly rate, so time has to be written as a decimal number. Fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour, or 0.25. Forty-five minutes is 0.75.
To go the other way, keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes.
Worked example
7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. In reverse, 7.75 hours is 7 hours plus 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.

What is 30 minutes as a decimal?
Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours. Fifteen minutes is 0.25, and 45 minutes is 0.75.
Is 7.5 hours the same as 7 hours 50 minutes?
No. 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes. 7 hours 50 minutes is 7.8333 hours.
What is 6 minutes in decimal hours?
Six minutes is exactly 0.1 hours, which is why many timesheets round to six-minute blocks.
