Nether Portal Calculator

Enter the X and Z coordinates of a portal. The calculator gives the matching coordinates in the other dimension, where you should build the linked portal.

Result

Nether coordinates
X 100, Y 64, Z -150
Nether X
100
Nether Z
-150
Y (unchanged)
64

Y is not scaled between dimensions. The Nether has a bedrock ceiling at Y 127, so a portal inside the Nether has to sit below it.

Formula

  • Nether X = floor(Overworld X ÷ 8)
  • Nether Z = floor(Overworld Z ÷ 8)
  • Overworld X = Nether X × 8 and Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8
  • Y stays the same

How the Nether Portal Calculator works

Horizontal distance in the Nether is compressed by a factor of eight. Walking one block there moves you eight blocks in the Overworld, which makes the Nether a fast travel network.

When you step through a portal, the game looks for an existing portal near the converted coordinates and creates one if none is found. Building your Nether portal at the exact converted spot makes the two link reliably.

Worked example

An Overworld portal at X 800, Z −1200 links to the Nether at X 800 ÷ 8 = 100 and Z −1200 ÷ 8 = −150. Keep the same Y if the terrain allows.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my portal link to the wrong place?

The game searches for the nearest existing portal within a range of the converted coordinates, 16 blocks in the Nether and 128 in the Overworld in Java Edition. Build the destination portal at the exact converted position to control the link.

Does the Y coordinate matter?

It is not scaled, but it is used when choosing the closest portal. Matching Y helps when several portals are stacked near the same X and Z.
