Formula

  • AVG = H ÷ AB
  • OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
  • SLG = (1B + 2 × 2B + 3 × 3B + 4 × HR) ÷ AB
  • OPS = OBP + SLG

How the Batting Average Calculator works

Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. Walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifices are not at-bats, so they do not affect it.

On-base percentage counts every way of reaching base safely. Slugging percentage weights hits by the bases gained. Their sum, OPS, is a quick overall measure of a hitter.

Worked example

With 150 hits in 500 at-bats, AVG = .300. Adding 60 walks, 5 hit-by-pitches and 5 sacrifice flies, OBP = 215 ÷ 570 = .377. With 30 doubles, 5 triples and 20 home runs, total bases are 250 and SLG = .500, so OPS = .877.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good batting average?

In the major leagues, .300 or better is excellent, around .250 is about average and below .200 is very poor.

Does a walk count as an at-bat?

No. A walk is a plate appearance but not an at-bat, so it raises on-base percentage without changing batting average.
