Formula

  • Displacement = π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × number of cylinders
  • 1 liter = 1,000 cc = 61.0237 cubic inches

How the Engine Displacement Calculator works

Displacement is the total volume swept by all the pistons in one stroke. Each cylinder sweeps a volume equal to the area of the bore times the length of the stroke.

An engine with a bore larger than its stroke is called oversquare and tends to rev higher. One with a longer stroke is undersquare and tends to produce more torque at low speed.

Worked example

A four cylinder engine with an 86 mm bore and 86 mm stroke: π ÷ 4 × 8.6² × 8.6 = 499.6 cc per cylinder. Four cylinders give 1,998.2 cc, a 2.0 liter engine, or 121.9 cubic inches.

Frequently asked questions

How many cc is a 350 cubic inch engine?

About 5,735 cc, or 5.7 liters. Multiply cubic inches by 16.387 to get cc.

What bore and stroke make a 302?

The Ford 302 has a 4.000 inch bore and a 3.000 inch stroke with eight cylinders: π ÷ 4 × 16 × 3 × 8 = 301.6 cubic inches.
