Formula

  • ERA = earned runs × 9 ÷ innings pitched
  • WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched
  • One out = one third of an inning

How the ERA Calculator works

Earned run average is the number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings. Runs that score because of fielding errors are unearned and do not count.

Box scores write a third of an inning as .1 and two thirds as .2. Those are not decimals, so 6.2 innings is 6 and 2/3, or 6.667. WHIP measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning.

Worked example

Three earned runs in 6.2 innings: innings = 6 + 2 ÷ 3 = 6.667. ERA = 3 × 9 ÷ 6.667 = 4.05. With 6 hits and 2 walks, WHIP = 8 ÷ 6.667 = 1.20.

Frequently asked questions
