How the Winning Percentage Calculator works

Winning percentage is the share of games won. Standings write it as a decimal with three places, so a team that wins five of eight games is at .625.

Most leagues count a tie as half a win and half a loss. The NFL has done so since 1972. Some leagues leave ties out of the calculation entirely.

Worked example

A 10-6 record: 10 ÷ 16 = .625, or 62.5 percent. With a tie, 10-5-1 gives (10 + 0.5) ÷ 16 = .656.

Frequently asked questions

How do ties affect winning percentage?

In most leagues a tie counts as half a win. A 9-7-1 team has (9 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .559.

What does .500 mean?

A team at .500 has won exactly half its games. Being five games over .500 means five more wins than losses.
